Boys and Girls Club Turns Down $800 Sponsorship

The Boys and Girls Club of Albany is always looking for sponsorships to pay for activities and athletic programs for kids in the community. Today, they turned down $800 from DieHard Piercing and Tattoo.

Jeremy McLain has owned DieHard since August of last year, and he was approached by Boys and Girls Club for sponsorship money. He agreed to put $800 towards field maintenance, and the sponsorship was due to be given May 4. "The head directors had a meeting and basically said it was inappropriate for a tattoo shop to support the Boys and Girls Club." said McLain.

On the Boys and Girls Club of America website, they state "BGCA is interested in partnering with companies that have solid brand images and reputations." DieHard has five stars on Facebook, Yellow Pages, and Google+.

The Boys and Girls Club of Albany is sponsored by multiple businesses around town, including Gametime Sports Bar & Grill. Boys and Girls Club as a national organization is sponsored by many corporations like WWE, and Altria, one of the biggest tobacco companies in the world.

"I pierce entire families...we all have kids except for one of us, we're a family oriented shop." said Jeremy McLain. "When exactly am I going to have approval in the business community as a legitimate business?"

  1. Are you kidding me, Boys and Girls Club of Albany must have some crappy people on the board. If they take support from Bars and tobacco businesses they should not discriminate against piercings and tattoo's.
BGCA Shame on You.... I will not support the boys and girls club, that is for sure... and I hope all my friends and family, and their friends and families do not support them as well. Word of Mouth Travels fast...
The Boys and Girls Club's actions have left a distaste with a substantial amount of people in this community.
DieHard Peircing, there are MANY programs out there that should not discriminate and most likely welcome your support. Programs like the YMCA, CASA, Special Olympics, Linn County Animal Rescue, SafeHaven, Meals On Wheels, and many other awesome programs that need support.
To the Boys and Girls Club.. Shame on You... your actions may have lost many supporters.
What kind of message are you sending to the kids... to not welcome diversity, to segregate, discriminate, and to be a bully.
This really bothers me that BGCA would decline support. Maybe its time a new club started up for Girls and Boys. Is the BGCA a 501c3?

  2. Are you serious? This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Albany BGCA you should be ashamed of yourselves. The people at Diehard are absolutely AMAZING and are putting their hard earned money out to help the club that most of their own kids go to. If I lived in Albany, my kids would be pulled from the club for this. I wouldn't stand for this. Someone needs to petition this decision and make BGCA make this right. I would much rather my kids club be represented by a tattoo shop than a tobacco company or a bar! Tattoos don't kill you, tobacco and alcohol do. Like I said I don't live in Albany, but bet your ass I won't let this go. My kids are part of the club in Sweet home and they will be hearing from me.

  4. Unreal. I have a much respect for the BGCA spent many years there growing up in Albany. My son and daughter spent time there. SMH at this. I have no ink on me, no piercings, however I have been in here inquiring about ink. Everyone I've talked to in there are amazing, caring, professional business in this community. As A&D counselor I raise an eye brow to the sponsorship of bars and taverns. Hell when I was in grade school my base ball team was sponsored by Ma's dairy farm. Lmao how many drink legally, then drive illegally some drunk? Oh yeah that was me many years ago before getting sober. Check yourselves board members or who ever is making this decision. How many employees down there have ink? I know a few even if they are covered up. It's for the kids, stop taking money from the bars then you can say no to other "questionable" business. Jeremy bless you for wanting too donate, your a class act family man and your crew rocks.

  7. I don't have any Tattoos but that is my personal choice and no reflection on this family business. The BGCA director's are way off base in their decision and need to wake up in 2016 and realize it isn't 1952.

  8. When are they going to wake to the current times! Ink is mainstream! Nothing to be ashamed of!!! What a waste!

  9. I have donated 5 fences of choice to boys and girls club auctions and have had 2 great experiances and 3 experiances from hell, only 3 isues i ever had in years of business, 2 were purchased by police and 1 from a fireman, and they wonder why we as people have little or no respect for public "servents" in this town, they were worse and thought they were better than anyone else in town, have not donated another fence since.

  12. Mr. McLain is a very kind person, putting himself out there to sponsor the Boy's and Girl's club. During his renovations, he came in quite frequently to my place place of business, a large home improvement retailer, and he was always just the nicest person. I am terribly offended that his kindness in sponsorship would be turned away in such a criminal manner; as if his legitimate, artistic, and mainstream-popular business were something to be ashamed of. Shame on the person who decided that his sponsorship was worthy of snubbing!

  15. The owner of Diehard asked me to help spread the word that this situation was rectified and that the BGCA apologized profusely.

  16. BGCA made a poor decision on this. Whoever had the final call should be reprimanded. Does the entire board who voted on this not have anything pierced or any ink? If they do they should be immediately fired for being open minded.
Not very inclusive of the BGCA...
